Dental Hygiene and Teeth Cleaning

Decatur, Tucker, Stone Mountain, and Clarkston, Georgia

Dental hygiene is the cornerstone of our general dentistry practice. By regularly visiting us for these routine cleanings, you can effectively prevent the development of many major dental problems which will jeopardize your oral health as well as your overall general health.

What You Should Know About Plaque

Plaque is a sticky substance that builds up on your teeth as food particles combine with bacteria, and it is also the primary cause of cavities.

While brushing and flossing are important for reducing the development of plaque, there are too many grooves and crevices in teeth to reach them all by hand. Aides such as fluoride rinses and battery-powered toothbrushes can help remove plaque before it does damage, but there is no substitute for a thorough, professional teeth cleaning.

Your Teeth Cleaning Appointments

At Bella Dental Services, our dentists believe in arming you with the knowledge you need to avoid tooth decay. That’s why during your visits, we will talk to you extensively about your hygiene habits and recommend improvements as needed.

After your initial examination and assessment, you will be placed in a category. Once placed in this category, your soft tissue (gums) will be managed accordingly. A series of x-rays give us a close look at your teeth and allow us to spot small areas of decay as they begin to develop. Special dental tools are used to check the level of plaque buildup and remove stubborn layers that a toothbrush can’t penetrate. If there are any cavities eating away at your tooth structure, we will recommend dental fillings> or other treatments to contain the bacteria and preserve your tooth.

We have also incorporated the ROTADENT toothbrush into our practice only for those patients that need it. If you would benefit from using this device, Dr. Cooper will provide you with an opportunity to obtain one.

At-Home Hygiene

Maintaining good oral hygiene practices at home is crucial to the health of your teeth and gums. It is important to always brush at least twice a day and floss at least once a day. However, if you make sure you are cleaning your teeth after every meal as opposed to simply when you wake up and before you go to bed, you will greatly reduce your chances for cavity development. During your regular dental check up, Dr. Cooper will give you specific details on how you can optimize your brushing and flossing.
